Mustakrakish is a giant red lake troll from Finland that appears in the episode Dethtroll. He is awakened when Dethklok performs a song called Awaken, which has lyrics taken from a Finnish book of Necronomic spells, and proceeds to go on a nationwide rampage.
He is voiced by James Hetfield of Metallica.
Description[]
Dethklok arrives in the country of Finland to apologize for nearly destroying the country during their last tour. As a gesture of goodwill, the band wrote Finland a new National Anthem ("Awaken") with lyrics copied from an ancient Necromantic spellbook the band acquired on their last tour. To the band's shock, the magical incantation actually summons the titular monster, and Mustakrakish proceeds to lay waste to the cities of Finland, destroying buildings and eating people. Though the crisis grips the entire country, The Tribunal are able to suppress the story globally.
Dethklok are initially indifferent to the crisis despite the insistence of Charles that they have to stop the creature. However, when they discover the wifi is down and the local bars won't serve them, they agree to stop the creature, using acoustic instruments ("grandpas guitars") offered by the tavern owners.
Dethklok attempts to make him go back to sleep with a lullaby. This almost works, until a Dethphone rings, waking him back up. When his call is dropped, Murderface angrily throws the Dethphone at Mustakrakish and it gets lodged in his throat. The troll frantically attempts to remove it, but screams and accidentally disembowels himself in the process and explodes to death. The members of Dethklok later feast on the remains of the deceased Mustakrakish.
Though great destruction unfolded, the death of Mustakrakish ensured the threat of the Lake Troll was finally gone for good. Rather than the temporary solution of putting him back to sleep every time he went on a rampage.
Trivia[]
- "Musta" means "black" in Finnish.
- Though Mustakrakish isn't based on any specific mythological figure, he takes clear inspiration from several sources:
- The legend of a giant troll trapped in a lake is reminiscent of the folktale of Trolltunga, a rock formation in Norway said to be the tongue of a giant troll who was turned to stone after mocking the sun.
- A giant troll (or ogre) causing chaos and destruction is a recurring theme in European folklore. Such as Dovregubben in The Hall of the Mountain King and Grendel from Beowulf. Like Grendel, Mustakrakish is also awakened by sound and unleashes death and destruction before being slain by the hero(es).
- Mustakrakish's appearance is quite similar to the Oni ("ogre") from Japanese mythology. Or a traditional Medieval-era depiction of a demon. His appearance is quite different from many "traditional" depictions of trolls in Scandinavia, though even in the original folklore, the appearances of these creatures vary.
- As a gigantic, towering monster from the ancient world, Mustakrakish is similar to a Jötunn from Norse Mythology. A type of monster that represents primordial chaos, often depicted as giants.
- The "Krakish" in his name sounds very similar to "Kraken." A giant sea monster originating from Scandanivan folklore.
- Murderface (unintentionally) slaying the monster by throwing a small object at him mirrors the Biblical story of David and Goliath. Goliath is often portrayed as a giant in media, though historical evidence suggests he was simply a skilled soldier.
