Reverend Aslaug Wartooth was a Norwegian reverend, husband of Anja Wartooth and father of Dethklok rhythm guitarist Toki Wartooth. Toki's father was the local leader of a mysterious and cultish sect of Christianity, which likely involved vows of silence and extreme disciplinarianism. Toki became petrified by any proximity to Aslaug, physical or mental.

History[]

Aslaug lived with his family in an abandoned village near Lillehammer, Norway.[1] In Toki’s childhood, he was an extremely harsh, demanding and cruel taskmaster, despite being depicted never saying a word. Aslaug deeply traumatized Toki, from tasking him to carry an oversized crate of fish up a hill in freezing weather underdressed,[2] to locking him in a deep hole for days at a time as a form of punishment.[3]

Later, he traveled to America to visit Toki in “Dethfam”, With Anja and a catatonic Toki in tow, Aslaug visited a Burzums, took silly pictures at a photo stand-in (posing as a bikini-clad black woman), watched Summer Lake at an Omniplex theater, and scored a hole-in-one playing minigolf at Marduk’s Putt & Stuff. Finally, he contributed scream vocals to the Dethklok family cut (during the credits).

He contracted an unknown form of cancer sometime before “Dethdad”, and was terminally ill during Dethklok’s visit to Norway. While never having had a stellar relationship with his son, Toki was able to reconcile with his father, forgiving him and even attempting to grant his last wish. Toki carried his father up to his birth home at the summit of an icy mountain, but slipped on the ice-covered front steps. Aslaug slid down the hill, breaking through the iced-over lake at the bottom. Toki was forced to watch through the ice as his father drowned, and sank to the depths of his icy grave. Aslaug’s birth home was subsequently destroyed (unintentionally) by Murderface.

In “Dethzazz”, Aslaug appeared in the flashbacks induced by Dr. Twinkletits. The flashbacks revealed more of the unrealistic tasks he forced on the vulnerable Toki, and showed him punishing his son severely when things out of Toki’s control went awry.

He and Anja appear briefly in The Doomstar Requiem, in the family album that Toki keeps in his “happy place.”

Personality[]

Aslaug was a non-speaking elderly man, though when Toki was a young child, he was a harsh disciplinarian. His hold over Toki was extreme, to the point that even as an adult, Toki remained absolutely wide-eyed and silent in his presence. Only in Aslaug’s final hour was Toki able to forgive his father, speak around him, and he even attempted to carry out Aslaug’s last request.

Trivia[]

  • “Dethdad” is titled after him.
  • Aslaug is a feminine Norwegian name, originating in Norse mythology as one of the wives of Ragnar Lodbrok.[4]
  • While his religion was never stated, his title implies a Christian denomination, and his wife has made the sign of the cross.[5][6]
  • He may be based off of Lars Kristian Vikernes, the domineering Christian father of notorious Norwegian metal musician Varg Vikernes.[7] Like Aslaug, Lars had a poor relationship with his son, and raised him in a strict religious environment.
